IIT Bombay Center for Semiconductor Technologies, SemiX was established in 2022 .

  • Semi stands for Semiconductors
  • X represents the integration of various semiconductor solutions – materials, equipment, devices, circuits, packaging, and software

SemiX enables semiconductor industry focussed R&D, workforce development and entrepreneurship by serving as a common interdisciplinary platform to integrate the energies of (a) Multiple involved academic disciplines, (b) Indian semiconductor consumers and creators, (c) Academicians, entrepreneurs, investors, and government policy makers.

The  center  leverages  the  strong  knowledge  and  outreach  networks  already established at IITB through large projects like the Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics and Skilled Manpower Development Programme (SMDP). The creation of this interdisciplinary platform now will be a timely and essential step towards sustaining IITB pre-eminence in semiconductor technology in India into the future.

Director's Note

Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri

Director, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Electronics has driven, and continues to drive, world’s growth in this information age. At the heart of electronics are semiconductors.

IIT Bombay has pioneered semiconductors research in India with the establishment of the Center for Excellence in Nanoelectronics (CENs) where worldclass semiconductor research was developed. The Skilled Manpower Development Program (SMDP) was hosted to support largescale chip design research and training.  These initiatives have led to strong industry engagement for research and training of top talent. IIT Bombay alumni power top semiconductor industries nationally & worldwide.

Today, India is a significant player in semiconductor design with aspirations to develop manufacturing, packaging, and indigenous chip designs. These aspirations are reflected in the India Semiconductor Mission to become a global hub of semiconductors, driving the development of a vibrant semiconductor ecosystem. IIT Bombay is a major part of these aspirations from policy development to implementation.

So how can IIT Bombay contribute to the success of India’s semiconductor mission? We have created the Center for Semiconductor Technologies or SemiX to integrate key resources and talent in all disciplines of the semiconductor domain and to build a platform that propels India’s semiconductor aspirations towards global leadership. IIT Bombay already has an incredible network of industry partners, academics (faculty and students), Alumni/advisors with world class experience, and policy makers. By integrating all these elements with focus on semiconductors, SemiX will deliver transformational changes in the way semiconductor research, training, incubation and policy development are done.

Our Vision

  • Be recognized as a world class platform of collaboration between academia, industry, and government, for semiconductor research, workforce development, and incubation.
  • Be among the top centers of semiconductor R&D and talent development in the world.

Our Activities

  • Be the nodal point at IIT Bombay with faculty from multiple departments to facilitate semiconductor related R&D, Training, Translation, Incubation, and formulation of Policy inputs.
  • Steer an industry partnership program on their research and training needs.
  • Drive an entrepreneurship program to facilitate incubation particularly in semiconductor related areas in collaboration with SINE.
